The Secret Longing of Your Heart

We must never forsake the true desires of our soul. Hidden beneath our careers, our families, and our hobbies is something deep and meaningful to us. It might be simple or something huge that you’ve dreamt about for years. Either way, all of us were meant to do something that is uniquely important in our hearts.

The question is, what stops us? It could be a variety of reasons, but I think one of the main ones is time. We push off some of our goals and dreams because life gets busy or we promise ourselves we’ll do it eventually. Maybe it’s not pride, fear, or insecurity that drives us away from how we want to spend our time. It could be as simple as life getting in the way. I love the way that John Eldredge phrases this:

Most men think they are simply here on earth to kill time — and it’s killing them. But the truth is precisely the opposite. The secret longing of your heart, whether it’s to build a boat and sail it, to write a symphony and play it, to plant a field and care for it — those are the things you were made to do.”

It’s encouraging to know that you are free to pursue the secret longing of your heart. That may sound like a mysterious way to describe our desires, but I think it strikes at the core of our humanity. We all have things we innately feel that we are made to do, and yet we sometimes ignore them. But I believe that much of the obstacle lies in simply revealing what we want to do. One of Jordan Peterson’s rules for life is to not “hide unwanted things in the fog.” In other words, make your desires known. Say and do what you believe you want out of life. Follow the secret longing of your heart, and God will guide you on your path.
